06/26/20 EDIT: With the new F150 out and the annoucement of the new Raptor release, I’d thought I’d bring up the need for a Luxury Trim Raptor again.

F ord recently announced the King Ranch Expedition of which they will sell thousands. Every truck manufacturer has an expensive cowboy trim because they print money, so it makes sense to spread that to the full size SUVs that are built off of those also have an expensive cowboy trim (looking at you GM, where’s Suburban High Country ?)

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

But Ford also has no problems selling their Raptor F150 which also commands a nice premium over the standard truck. Combining the two trims seems like a no brainer. The tough and rugged image of the King Ranch and the tough and rugged image of the Raptor is the $90k+ elephant in the room.

And you know Ford would sell every last one.

Have you sat in a Yukon XL  Denali ? I get that it’s a GMC trim, but it’s every bit as nice as a King Ranch.

The only problem is that a King Ranch Raptor might cannibalize sales from the regular King Ranches.  Yeah, more is better but if you put a KR Raptor out there, most of the buyers that’re able to afford a regular KR will just pay the extra for a KR Raptor to further show off.

Denali is extremely nice but it's more along the lines of the Limited and Platinum trims. I'm specifically calling out the cowboy luxury trims.

Probably, and Ford would then make more profit per truck sold. It's no different than saying that the Platinum trim eats into Lariat sales.

Should they do a King Ranch Explorer? Yes. Will they? Probably not.

I like where you’re going with this, but doesn’t a comfy seat defeat the purpose of a fast off road truck? Don’t you want to be held in place? I’m sure other places in the interior would be better served, seats need to be sporty IMHO.

I think Raptor buyers and KR buyers are looking for a very different vibe. They’re both available with all the fixin s (as KR buyer s would say ) but the Raptor is for the g uy who’s more likely to turn his ranch land into a race track than a horse stable.

I will give you one reason why this might be a bad idea:

KRRaptor.

Nope, it should be the Ruling ( or Rule the) Ranch Raptor. The advertising would be great. Ford’s Triple R or RRR (The logo could be one of those stair-stepped designs like a branding iron).

The most interesting thing to me that I’ve recently re-learned about pickup trucks: how much people are willing to pay for them.  It’s insane.  I get it for a work vehicle that you need to do a job.  But dang... people are willing to go into debt/shell out a whole lot of money for a vehicle.

I am 99% sure they offered the high output ecoboost they put in the raptor into the king ranch trim. Either king ranch or platinum trim
